What is open work permit?
Open work permit are permits that allow you to work in Canada with the freedom of switching between employers, locations and occupations. You are not tied to work with an employer, and you do not need an approved LMIA from your employer.
Who is eligible?
1. International student graduates
An international student after completion of their studies is eligible to work in Canada on post graduate work permit. The duration of this work permit depends on the length of the education they’ve completed in Canada.
Most of the LMIA exempt work permits are given to international student graduates.
2. Permanent residency applicants
If you’ve applied for permanent residency and your temporary status in Canada has expired but you are still waiting to hear about your PR application, you do not have to worry about your status in Canada, you can apply for bridging open work permit. Also, you employer doesn’t need a LMIA approved based on your bridging work permit to keep you employed.
3. Spouses and common law partners of Canadians and temporary residents
If you are the spouse of a Canadian citizen, foreign worker or international student, you can apply for an open work permit and do not require an LMIA to work with an employer.
